ACNE SCARRING
Acne is a skin condition whereby dead skin cells, bacteria and oils from the sebaceous glands clog hair follicles. This can be hereditary or attributed to hormonal imbalances within the body.
Types of acne:
-
Papules: small red tender bumps
-
Pustules: similar to papules but have a white tip in the centre, caused by a build-up of pus.
-
Nodules: large hard lumps beneath the surface of the skin that can be painful. They can last from weeks to months.
-
Cystic: large pus-filled lumps that bear a resemblance to boils. They are usually red, painful to touch and have the biggest risk of scarring.
Causes:
-
Inherited: It may be the case that the acne condition may be hereditary, i.e. runs in the family.
-
Testosterone: increased testosterone levels (often during puberty) can cause the sebaceous glands to increase sebum, which in turn blocks the pores.
-
Medication: steroids, lithium and some anti-epileptic drugs can cause acne.
-
Smoking
-
Cosmetic products: some products may cause your pores to block. Make sure you are using non-comedogenic formulas to prevent acne.
